Kusadasi History

The first settlements around Kusadasi where inhabited by the Lelegians and Carians who came from the Central Anatolia in the 3000BC, they populated on the skirts of Pilav Mountain and founded Ania and Melia. In the 10th century BC other settlements were established around Kusadasi, Phygale, Marethesion and Neopolis. In 546BC Persians captured the city and dominated the region until the conquest of Alexander the Great. Centuries later, the region was dominated by the Romans and Byzantines and finally fell under the Turkish power. During the Byzantine period the city was used as an important trade port, mostly used by Venetians and Genoese who called the city as ?Scala Nova?. In 1186 A.C. the city was added to the Turkish domination with the invasion of the region by Kilic Aslan II and during this period, Kusadasi has become the export-gate of the caravan-routes to the Aegean. Archaeology Museum The Archaeological Museum of Izmir (Arkeoloji Müzesi) close to Konak Square, exhibits an impressive collection of ancient and Roman artifacts recovered from area excavations, including Bergama, Iasos, Bayrakli, and Agora. The exhibition is arranged in different floors and halls. The First Floor This floor features the statues of Demeter, Poseidon, Artemis which were found in Agora, embellished ceiling coatings belonging to Belevi Mausoleum and some architectural pieces coming from antique cities Larissa, Claros, Didyma. In the interior section of the hall, marble statues like the marble statue of river god Kaistros found in Ephesus are exhibited. Getting Around izmir

Izmir has a well developed transportation network with national and international highways, railways, and airways and maritime lines. Public transport is operated by the Municipality and its red buses that can be taken from anywhere; simply show up at the bus station (?otogar?) and announce your destination to the driver. The fares are low but if long stays it is recommended to get a ?Kent Kart? (City card); it is more reasonable than direct pays. Kent Karts are available in the bus ticket offices or at some shops. There are available boat/ferry services provided by the Municipality. The passenger boats cover the routes of: Konak-Karsiyaka-Konak, Konak-Bostanli-Konak, Konak-Bayrakli-Konak, Goztepe-Karsiyaka-Goztepe and the ferry boats, for cars and passengers, Uckuyular-Bostanli-Uckuyular. Izmir is very accessible by rail, boat and flight. By Rail Izmir is well served by rail with regular intercity service from Istanbul and Ankara. It counts with two railway stations: Basmane in the city centre that is the major terminal for intercity trains, and Alsancak in the north that is mainly a commuter and local route. The intercity services to Ankara take a journey between 13-14 hours. Trains for Istanbul connect with a ferry at Bandirma. Izmir History

Izmir's history dates back to 3000 B.C. according to archaeological studies carried out in 1948 by the British Archaeological Institute of Athens and, after 1960, by the Turkish Historical Association under Prof. Ekrem Akurgal that showed that originally Izmir was known as Smyrna and founded in an older city in the Tepekule site where today is located Bayrakli by the Trojans. Smyrna was captured and destroyed by the Lydian King Alyattes in 600BC, later it was reconstructed and restores. Following the Lydians were defeated by Persians during the 7th century. During the reign of the Persians the Greek and Persian cultures interacted, there are still remains of monuments in Greco-Persian style. In 334 B.C. The city of Izmir is located in the Aegean region in western turkey, at the gulf with the same name Izmir. Ataturk Mausoleum The Ataturk Mausoleum or Antibakir is the place where the rests of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Kemal Ataturk, are resting. The Mausoleum is located on the Anit Tepesi, beyond the railroad station, about 2.5km/1.5mi southwest of Ulus Meydani. The Mausoleum was designed by Prof. Emin Onat in association with Prof. Orhan Arda, its construction took about 10 years and completed in 1953. The building is a notable example of modern Turkish architecture, and bears lively collection of memorabilia from Ataturk's life and work, private library, documents, stamps, coins, books and cars. Ataturk?s body was buried in the Mausoleum on November 10 1953, in a great ceremony. The Mausoleum features a large area known as Mausoleum Hill. Ankara's public transportation system is well developed, cheap and easy to use. Among the alternatives the city is well served by the Municipality buses, public buses, dolmus, taxi and subway. By Bus (Otobüs) The bus service is provided by two companies. One operated by the Municipality called Belediye Otobüsü, the buses are either blue or red colorized and dark blue stripped. They use electronic tickets, and that is why one has to buy the ticket in advance. The tickets are sold in the ticket kiosk (bufe). The second company is privately run Halk Otobüsü, which are blue or green. These buses just accept cash. There are also green double-decker buses operated privately, that as the second company just accept cash. Underground (Metro-Hafif Metro) Ankara has two types of metro lines serving the city.
